Question
Dear Rabbi, I have been using a kettle all year, and all I use it for is boiling water for tea, coffee, etc. Am I permitted to use this kettle without koshering it during Pesach since I only use it for boiling water, and no chametz has gotten into it? Also, I do have a new kettle but I will not be able to go to the Mikvah to toivel it as I am staying in and staying home. I love to make tea and I ask what I should do for Pesach regarding this. Thank you so much Rabbi. I wish for you and your family Chag Kasher vsameach
Answer
Shalom,
Thank you for your question. Yes, you may use the kettle you use all year around for pessach. You should clean it well (especially the handle) and then as an extra precaution you should fill the kettle with water and bring it to a hard boil, then pour the water out.
In regards to the new kettle (or any new vessels) that need to be put in a mikvah – this year when we are under the strictures of the corona virus, many organizations and Rabbis have organized a way for people to sell their vessels online to a non Jew, then borrow them back. By doing so they are exempt from having to be put in the mikvah until we are able to get to the mikvah again. You should check online with your local Rabbi or kashrut authority. (In Israel the Zomet organization has arrange this).
