Question
What is the Jewish and Chasidic approach to getting older? What are the words of encouragement for a male friend who is going to celebrate his 70th birthday?
Answer
There is a commandment to respect an older person. Maimonides writes that age often enables people to recognize the virtues of ethical behavior as the more physical passions cool. You can wish your friend a life of good health and productivity "until 120!".
