Question
Hi! I was making a salad dressing and it called for a jalape?o. I mindlessly picked up my meat knife that I used to cut chicken the night before and a dairy blade from my blender (which I haven’t used in months). I know jalepenos have a status of “charif” and make things more complicated in terms of fleishig/milchig but since I haven’t used my blender in ages is it still Ok to use? Or is it now treif?
Answer
ב"ה Shalom Indeed your jalapeno is considered "Davar Charif" and has now absorbed from your meat knife and from your dairy blender. Therefore, your jalapeno dressing is now "treif" because it has absorbed from meat and milk. The status of the blender raises many issues. According to some opinions "Davar Charif" works in a way that it absorbs from the utensil and now the "davar Charif" has the same status as the utensil meat or dairy. However, we do not say that the "Davar Charif" has the power to make another utensil meaty or diary. (שולחן ערוך המבואר יור"ד סי' צ"ו עמ' קי בשם אבן העוזר ) This is in addition to the fact that the blender is not "ben Yomo" , it hasn't been used with diary within 24 hours prior to this use. In addition, we can ask how dairy was your blender? Was it used for hot dairy foods? Some even say that we can go after "rov Tashmisho" most of the use of the blender which probably is cold. דעת תורה סי' צ"ט עמ' תלד)). Therefore, you blender does not need to be made kosher, however if you want to satisfy all opinions you should kasher your blender blades if it can be done so easily. (See: דבר חריף פרק ד:ד, שו"ת ישיב יצחק חלק נ"ה סי' לג ) All the best
