Question
Is there any advice on what we should for when considering what business or job to do. Or whether a person should work for himself or someone else ? Are you meant to love your job ? Should we looking for certain things when choosing an employer ?
Answer
Shalom, Thank you for your questions. In general, a persons’ work is an important part of their life – and as such one should consider carefully what work they do. The first point to consider is making certain that one’s work does not involve any sin at all. No theft, stealing, falsehood etc. Not having to work on Shabbat and festivals. Not having to break the laws of kosher food. Keeping the practices of modesty, and purity. These are very important – and in any case of doubt, you should consult a Rabbi to clarify what is and isn’t allowed. After that, much depends on what options exist. A person has a mitzvah to make a living – and in may cases that obligation does not allow for choices – not of who to work for, or enjoying your job etc. If the only work is menial labor, than that is the correct thing to do in order to be able to pay one’s way in life, (and certainly support their spouse and children). But, if a person is in the situation where they have choices, then they generally should find work that uses their G-d given abilities to the best. The “best” being, the good of the world. Look for work that allows you to make the world a better place. In general, such a work will also give you much satisfaction. This is also, by in large, way more important than a job that pays more (assuming that both jobs provide enough for your needs). With all this said, much will depend on your personal situation and character. Wishing you all success in your work – and may it be a blessing for you and all those around you. Blessings.
