Ask the Rabbi
Question
Hi, I am studying to get a degree in psychology, and I ran into a book written by Dr David Burns called "feeling great" which I found to have amazing techniques on how to help people overcome depression and anxiety and OCD etc. But I noticed that many times he will sort of mention Buddhism as a backing. I was wondering if I need to be concerned with any of his great techniques with the thought that maybe this stems from the Buddha? Or if the technique makes sense and it works and it doesn't go against Halachah I can just ignore his references.
Answer
A quick visit to his site infers that Buddhism is not a side-point but rather a significant aspect of his teachings (he uses "Buddhist foundations and principals"), which is problematic.
