Question
Dear Rabbi, When making kiddish on Friday night and Shabbos morning, is there a requirement for all the people being yotzi kiddish to have the wine/grape juice from the original cup that kiddish was being made from, rather than each person drinking from a cup that has wine/grape juice which was poured before kiddish? Thank you.
Answer
ב"ה Shalom A very basic and important question, which needs to be applied every Shabbat. The person who makes Kiddush is required to drink "mlo logmav", which is the amount of fluid that the person can fill one cheek with, which is the majority of a "Revi'it.(שו"ע ערוך אורח חיים סי' רע"א:יא) Those listening to Kiddush are not required to drink from the kiddush at all, though it a choice Mitzvah if all the listeners drink form the Kiddush, even the smallest amount. שו"ע ערוך אורח חיים סי' רע"א:יד)). In order to avoid issues of pouring from the main cup to the cups of others, one may have wine in front of them before Kiddush was made and then drink from their cups. If the amounts in front of them are small they should wait to drink their wine after the person who made Kiddush has drunk. שו"ע ערוך אורח חיים סי' רע"א: טז-יז, משנה ברורה ס"ק פג, שמירת שבת כהלכתה ח"ב, פרק מח הערה עד) All the best
