Shalom Rabbi, I have been reflecting on the verse in Zechariah (8:23), where the prophet says that in the future, ten men from the nations will take hold of the corner of a Jew’s garment, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.” The wording immediately brought to mind the commandment of tzitzit in Numbers 15:38–39, where the Torah instructs that the corners of the garment contain the fringes with a thread of tekhelet, which serves as a reminder of all the mitzvot of Hashem. From what I understand in our mesorah, during many centuries when the exact source of tekhelet was uncertain, our sages ruled that wearing white tzitzit alone still fulfilled the mitzvah. At the same time, the Torah itself connects the blue thread with remembering the commandments and guarding against being led astray by the desires of the heart and the eyes. This raised a sincere question in my mind. When the Navi Zechariah speaks of the nations grasping the kanaf of a Jew’s garment in the time when recognition of Hashem spreads through the world, is the image understood in Chassidic or rabbinic thought as purely symbolic of attachment to the Jewish people and their emunah? Or might the Navi also be alluding to the visible mitzvah of tzitzit itself — perhaps even including the thread of tekhelet that the Torah describes? In other words, within the teachings of our sages and the deeper Chassidic understanding of mitzvot, is the physical sign of tzitzit on the garment considered part of the testimony that the nations will see when they recognize that the Shechinah rests with Israel? I ask this only מתוך בקשת אמת — seeking understanding of how the peshat of the verse and the received mesorah are harmonized. Thank you for your time and guidance.

The simple and accepted meaning is that Zecharia is speaking figuratively and not specifically about holding our tzitzit. What will be in the future, we must wait and see.
