Hi rabbi, I grew up in the conservative movement and was given a talit on my bar mitzvah. Recently I’ve gotten more and more observant and keeping more mitzvot. Im wondering if I should keep wearing my talit when I daven or should I only use a talit katan? Thank you so much

Shalom, Thank you for your question. There are several good ways to approach your question, with issues such as what is the practice of your new community? What did your father do? And so on. But, in my opinion, unless there are pressing reasons to stop wearing the tallit, you should continue to do so. Firstly, there are large groups of Orthodox communities that have the custom for non-married post barmitzvah boys to wear a tallit. So, it’s not a strange or unacceptable practice. Next, I believe that it is a healthy outlook to see the parts of Judaism that you merited to get from your past in the Conservative movement as an integral part of your overall Jewish life. It sounds like they gave you some good things that led you on a path of growth. For that you should appreciate what you gained from them – and where it is possible, to retain it and just strengthen it. To have been able to have had a bar mitzvah, to have been given a tallit, to have been part of Jewish community – are all wonderful things. Cherish them, and go forward with them to an even stronger connection to Hashem and His Torah. Blessings.
