Ask the Rabbi
Question
Shalom, Some people who do archaeological research say that the god El in Judaism actually comes from the Canaanite god El. What is the difference between the pagan Canaanite god El and the Jewish god El? Why do some people argue that they are the same god? How can I prove that the God of Abraham is not a mythological and pagan god?
Answer
The word El or Elohim refers to the real One and Only God and is also used for Elohim Acherim - other false gods.
It is completely different beliefs. Trying to connect them to each other makes no sense.
