Question
Can I use a scooter on Yom Tov to go home from Shul similar to children using a scooter? It takes over 2 hours to walk. I have an elderly mother I would like to get home quicker.
Answer
ב"ה
Shalom,
With all due respect to your mother, the mitzva of honoring parents doesn’t override Shabbat or Yom tov. Therefore, one may not ride on a scooter on Yom Tov for the same reasons one may not ride a bicycle on Shabbat. As said in a previous answer because of , "Uvdin Dechol", meaning we do not to do some practices on Shabbat and Yom tov which are weekday like and diminish the holiness of Shabbat and Yom Tov. (See Shmirat Shabbat Kehilchata 16:18, Orchot Shabbat Chap. 19 note 95.)
On the other hand, depending on the needs and circumstances of a parent , the mitzva of honoring your mother may override the mitzva of Tefilla with a minyan for men who are required to daven with a minyan.
