Question
Please advise what side or direction to face when being in the bathroom? There are different opinions and views, so I don’t know whats the correct answer. Please help
Answer
ב"ה Shalom, The issue of which direction to have a bowel movement is only in an open area, like in a field or a forest , if somebody is hiking in the outdoors for example. According to the Shulchan Aruch(3, 6) if a person must go while in an open area, the person should not be positioned with the backside towards the west, since the Divine Presence is considered to be in the west. However, a person may be positioned with the face towards the south and backside towards north. Passing urine can be done in any direction. When a person is in a bathroom in a building and is surrounded by walls, there is no issue of which way the person is facing while having a bowel movement. All the Best
