Question
Shavua Tov,
I grew up in and am currently living in Australia and all minyanim around have the custom of Nusach Ashkenaz (except for Chabad). My parents are Israeli and moved here a while ago, and my familys custom is to daven Nusach Sefard. Accordingly, my father grew up davening Sefard and my grandfather who still lives in Israel also davens Sefard. Bz"h one day I will also return to Israel.
I am accustomed to davening both nusachim equally (I learnt initially to daven in Ashkenaz, though), and currently when davening with my shul I daven Ashkenaz, and by myself or when I end up at a Chabad minyan I do Sefard.
My question is whether I should actually daven Sefard at all times, even with an Ashkenaz minyan, due to it being my familys tradition or even vice-versa. I have no personal preference, it is completely contingent on the importance of historical minhagim.
Thank you in advance and בשורות טובות.
Answer
Shalom,
Thank you for your question. Generally, you should keep your family minchag – which in this case is to daven Nusach Sefard. There is a halacha that when a person moves to a new location on a permanent basis, they should change their practices to that of the new location. However, in your case there are several reasons to stay davening Sefard. Firstly, you plan to return to Israel. Secondly, even in Australia you occasionally daven with Chabad that uses nusach Sefard. Thirdly, it is not clear to me that nusach Ashkanaz is truly the custom of Australia, when even in your community you find people with differing customs.
Of course, when you are the Chazan you should daven according to the Nusach of the shule you are in.
Blessings.
