Question
Since Ilan Ramon, and now the Mars Rover, Space seems to be on the mind of many people.
Within Torah thought, could there be life outside of Earth? Should one at all be concerned with this?
Answer
There's nothing in Jewish thought that rules out extra-terrestrial life. On the contrary, many early Jewish thinkers believed that the heavenly spheres were themselves alive. Rav Kook (Ein Aya) writes that the universe was created minimizing the role of the inanimate and maximizing the role of living creatures.
Be constructively concerned with strengthening the People of Israel in these days of raging anti-semitism and terror against the Jewish State.
