Rav Kook innovatively explains some difficulties in two Talmudic stories via relating to the issue of questioning G-d, and the difference between the great Torah scholars and the masses. This issue comes up often in the context of the Shoah and offers much food for thought.

Aaron"s Uncle Uzziel

Rabbi David Sperling

Question

I"m confused as to how Uzziel was Aaron"s uncle. Can you explain the genealogy?

Answer

Shalom, Thank you for your question. The genealogy is as follows – Levi, the son of Ya’kov, had three sons. One of them was Kehat. Kehat himself had four sons – Amram, Yitzhar, Chevron and Uzi’el. Amram’s son was Aaron. This makes Aaron the nephew of Uziel – and Uziel (the brother of Aaron’s farther Amram) his uncle. (See Bamidbar chapter3 verse 19). I hope this is of some help to you. Blessings.
