רבי '''מצ'מון בן יפת בן בונדאר''' היה [[נגיד]] ארץ [[תימן]] במאה ה-12 וישב בעיר [[עדן]]. הוא היה [[מדינאי]] ו[[דיין]] שסמכותו הייתה על כל יהודי הגולה מ[[הודו]] ועד [[ספרד]].<br />

רבי מצ'מון היה בן למשפחת נגידים מפורסמת, היא [[משפחת בונדאר]]. סבו בונדאר ואביו יפת היו גם נגידי יהודי תימן, ותרמו רבות ל[[ישיבה|ישיבות]] ה[[גאונים]] ב[[בבל]] וכן לישיבות [[ארץ ישראל]] ו[[מצרים]]. נוהג זה לתרום לישיבות הגאונים בבבל היה קיים בתימן במשך מאות שנים: במאות ה-10 וה-11 נזכרים במכתבי ה[[גאונים]] שמות של חכמים מתימן שהיו אחראים על גביית הכספים המיועדים לצורכי ישיבות בבל, כמו [[עמרם בן יהוחנן]] מהעיר [[צעדה (עיר)|צעדה]], ידידיה "אלוף" מ[[צנעא]], משה ושלמה בר סעיד מהעיר ירים ועוד.<br />

כאבותיו, היה רבי מצ'מון "פקיד הסוחרים" - ממונה על עיר הנמל הבינלאומית עדן ושותפו המסחרי של מושל העיר. תפקיד זה היה רב עוצמה שכן בתקופתו פרח הסחר הבינלאומי בעיר. תימן נמצאת על אם-הדרך שהוליכה אל האוצרות הטמונים בסחר-הודו בין הודו לאירופה. המפתחות לניהול המסחר הבינלאומי הזה הוחזקו בידיו של רבי מצ'מון ששמעו היה בכל ארצות הסחר, ומכאן כוחו וסמכותו על כל יהודי הגולה, במזרח, באפריקה ואירופה. הוא היה שותפו של ה[[וזיר]] של תימן ה[[אמיר]] בילאל בן גריר. השותפות בין רבי מצ'מון הנגיד לאמיר חרגה מעסקים רגילים והקיפה שיתוף פעולה אף בענייני בטחון המדינה. כפי שצייד רבי מצ'מון אניות סחר, כך צייד גם ספינות מלחמה. ספינות אלה שימשו את הכוחות שעליהם פיקד האמיר ושיצאו לאזור ההר, כדי להילחם באויבי הסולטאן. רבי מצ'מון כרת בריתות עם מנהיגי ערב המקומיים, למסחר ולאספקת ציוד צבאי, ועם השליטים החולשים על דרכי הגישה לתימן וממנה. הוא מכר וקנה את סחורותיהם בשבילם, חילק את הסחורות וההכנסות שהגיעו מהם בין השותפים, ובעיקר, היה לו "בית פקידות" (בערבית "דאר וכאלה") שבו אצר את כל הסחורות והכספים שהגיעו אליו, ובו היה המשא ומתן המסחרי. בית הפקידות שימש כ[[בורסה]]. הסכם בעל פה שבין הסוחרים היה חסר תוקף, אלא אם כן נעשה בבית הפקידות של הנגיד מצ'מון. מתוקף תפקידו, הוא שימש גם כדיין כדי לערוך מסמכים משפטיים. הוא טיפל לרוב בעזבונות השייכים ליתומים ואלמנות מארצות רחוקות, והגן על זכויותיהם מפני שליטים גזלנים או בעלי חוב משתמטים. משאבד סוחר עם כל רכושו בים, נהג הנגיד מצ'מון לשלוח למשפחה השכולה סיוע ממשי בתורת צדקה. הוא נעזר רבות על ידי שלושת חברי בית הדין של העיר עדן שבראשו עמד הרב סעיד בן מרחב, ובגניזה הקהירית ישנן עשרות רבות של תעודות ו"מעשי בית דין" שיש להם זיקה בו, או שירים לכבודו. הוא האישיות המרכזית של סחר הודו, כפי שמצטייר מתוך כתבי הגניזה. כממונה על נמל עדן והמשגיח על המכסים בו, הוא קבע את מחירי הסחורות והחזיק צי אניות. פעם פתח שירות ישיר בין עדן לבין האי צילון ([[סרי לנקה]]), ובאנייה הראשונה שהפליגה לשם נסעו צורפי זהב יהודים מארץ מרוקו, שבאו אל עדן. במעשה בית דין רשמי, הוא מתואר כך: "'''ממונה מן ראשי גלויות ומן ראשי ישיבות על כל ישראל, ונאמן השליטים אשר הם במדינת הים ואשר הם במדבר'''". כלומר, הנגיד מצ'מון עשה הסכמים עם השליטים ושודדי הים, שאניות הסוחרים פקודיו עברו בקרבתם, וכשם שהוא הוכר על ידי השליטים המוסלמים, כך נתמנה על כל ישראל כשופט עליון, באופן זה שהסוחרים היהודים, היו מביאים את עצומותיהם לפני בתי דין של חכמי ישראל, וניכר היטב מכתבי הגניזה כי רשת אחת של שיפוט יהודי הייתה פרושה מספרד ועד הודו. בכל ארץ הייתה רשות עליונה. ראשי הגלויות הכירו כולם בראשותו של הנגיד מצ'מון. <br />

כפי הנראה, ראשי הגלויות שהיו בתימן במצרים ובבבל בהיותם צאצאי בית דוד, הם שהעניקו לו את הסמכות על היהודים בכל הארצות. עמד בקשרים הדוקים עם חכמי יהודי מצרים ותמך בהם וכך כותב עליו רבי [[מצליח הכהן]] ראש ישיבת גאון יעקב שהועתקה מארץ ישראל למצרים: "'''נגיד לעם ה', שר השרים, ראש הקהילות'''". בית הדין במצרים פנה אליו בתארים '''"שרנו וגדולנו מרנא ורבנא מצ'מון השר וגדול בישראל"'''. גם עם ראש הגולה בבבל וחכמיה עמד בקשר מתמיד ותמך בהם כלכלית ביד רחבה.<br />

==משכין שלום בין ראשי הגלויות בעולם היהודי==<br />

עקב היותו מקור הכנסה בלתי נדלה למרכזי התורה שמחוץ לתימן, ותלותם של מנהיגי העולם היהודי בו גדולה, נאבקו רבים על הזכות לקבל ממנו הכרה. כך יצא שבשנת 1131 התמודדו על הכרתו שני מרכזים גדולים, האחד בבבל והשני במצרים. תרומות חכמי תימן לגולת בבל היו ידועות זה מאות בשנים, וכאשר צמח לו מרכז תורה במצרים בראשות הרב מצליח הכהן ראש ישיבת גאון יעקב (שגלתה מארץ ישראל למצרים) תרמו חכמי תימן גם למרכז זה מתוך כבוד לארץ ישראל. בן דודו של ראש הגולה בבבל הגיע לתימן ונתקבל בכבוד גדול כיאה לבן משפחת המלוכה היהודית שסמכותה הייתה על כל העולם היהודי. אז גילה האיש כי יהודי תימן רוחשים כבוד גם לראש ישיבת גאון יעקב ממצרים, בכך שחכמיהם פותחים את תפילותיהם ודברי תורתם בנטילת רשות מראש גולת בבל וראש ישיבת גאון יעקב, נוהג שהיה מקובל אז בעולם היהודי. הדבר חרה לו מאוד, והוא דרש התנצלות מיידית קבל עם ועדה. אולם היו שם מתומכי הרב מצליח שלא הסכימו לכך, והדבר יצר מחלוקת גדולה. רבי מצ'מון שהיה פטרונם של שני האישים, החזיר את הנוהג הקדום המכיר בראש הגולה הבבלי בלבד, ועם זאת, הצליח בסמכותו להשכין את השלום בין המחנות. הוא גם דאג לשלוח מתנות לראש הישיבה במצרים ולשאול אותו שאלה הלכתית כדי לפייס אותו. מחלוקת זו ביטאה אינטרסים חזקים ומורכבים של סמכות, יוקרה וכלכלה שפועלים בערבוביה אצל ראשי הגולה.<br />

==פירסומו בעולם וגדלותו בתורה==<br />

מתוקף תפקידו הרם, היה מחוייב פקיד הסוחרים להיות בקי בכל דיני המשפט העברי מלבד המשפט הכללי. לפסקיו היה פרסום גדול בכל מרחב הסחר שמספרד ועד הודו. אחד מחכמי המערב ר' אברהם בן פרחיה שנפגש עם רבי מצ'מון הנגיד, נפעם מחכמתו בתורה ומעשיו הטובים ונהיה ממעריציו הגדולים, הוא חיבר על רבי מצ'מון הנגיד שירים בחייו וגם לאחר פטירתו, בהם הוא מכנה אותו בתארים תורניים כמו "נר ישראל" "ארון התורה" "ועומד בכל חכמה ומבין כמארי מר", הוא משווה אותו לגדולי ישראל כרבי [[יוחנן בן ברוקה]] וכן גדולי הראשונים שהיו מפורסמים במערב כ[[רבנו נסים]] מקירואן ו [[ר"י מגש]]. בהשוואתו את רבי מצ'מון לבן מיגש הוא כותב כך: '''"ממזרח אלי מערב עדי קרית מלך רב, יצא שם לאדוני כבן מגש חניך הרב, הוא נגיד עלי אומה לא יכם שמש ושרב"'''. גם דייני בית הדין במצרים היו נזקקים לדעתו, באחד המקרים בהם קיבל בית הדין עדויות על אסון טביעה, לא רצה בית הדין להמשיך בפעולותיו במשך שנה, עד אשר יפסוק להם רבי מצ'מון וכלשון הדיינים "ותעלומה יוציא לאור". במכתבם הם מכנים את רבי מצ'מון כך: '''"לפני שרנו וגדולנו מרנא ורבנא מצ'מון השר וגדול בישראל"'''. <br />

את מקומו של רבי מצ'מון ירש בנו רבי חלפון. אל אחד מצאצאיו, שהיה גם הוא נגיד ונקרא רבי מצ'מון (שמריה) בן דוד, הקדיש בהערצה רבי [[יהודה אלחריזי]] עותק מספרו ה"[[תחכמוני (ספר)|תחכמוני]]".<br />
