נולד לישע. חי בעיר חמדה ומכאן כינויו "אלחמדי". נדד בתימן לרוב, הן כדי לתור בחכמה והן לצורכי פרנסה. הגיע עד העיר [[עדן]] שבקצה הדרומי של תימן ומכאן כינויו הנוסף "אלעדני". <br />

חמדי היה מאחרוני האסכולה הקדומה של חכמי תימן אשר עסקו רבות ב[[מדע]]ים וב[[פילוסופיה]] בהשפעתו של ה[[רמב"ם]]. הוא חיבר כ-14 חיבורים במקצועות התורה בהם ניכרת בקיאותו הרבה במקרא במשנה בתלמוד ובמדרשי [[חז"ל]]. מלבד זאת, הייתה לו בקיאות ב[[אסטרונומיה]] ובפילוסופיה. <br />

בקיאות גדולה הייתה לו בכתבי הרמב"ם והוא חיבר שני ספרים מילוניים על [[פירוש המשניות לרמב"ם|פירוש המשניות לרמב"ם]] ועל [[משנה תורה]] לרמב"ם, במילונים אלו הוא ביאר מילים קשות ומושגים שהיו פזורים בשני ספרי הרמב"ם הנ"ל. בכמה מחיבוריו הסתיר את שמו בכינויים שונים כמו "אלואל בן ורינאן" שב[[גימטריה]] במספר קטן עולה שמו דוד בן ישע. רבי דוד חי חיי צער ופרנסתו הייתה בדוחק והוא הוצרך לנטוש את ביתו ואת שבעת ילדיו ולבקש לחמו כ[[מלמד תינוקות]].<br />

*אלוגיז אלמוגני (=הקצר המספיק) - פירוש מדרשי-פילוסופי על התורה. בראש כל פרשה הוא כתב פתיחה מליצית קצרה הנחרזת עם שם הפרשה. מטרת הספר כלשונו: {{ציטוטון|להדריך את המתלמדים בדברים קצרים ברורים לא לשם בקשת מוניטין כפי שיודע הבורא יתברך ויתעלה}} בסוף חיבורו הוא כותב {{ציטוטון|ותהי השלמת החיבור ביום ששי ח' בכסלו שנת אמרו לאחיכם עמי ולאחותכם רחמה ליצירה ([[1487]]) בעיר חמדה תחרוב, וירושלים תתבנה}}.<br />
*שרח - פירוש על משנה תורה להרמב"ם בדרך שאלה ותשובה. מקורותיו הם התלמוד, ספרות הגאונים, חיבורי הרמב"ם, מדרש אלסקילי, רב [[סעדיה גאון]], [[אבן ג'נאח]], שאלות ר' [[יהושע הנגיד]]. בדומה לחכמי תימן באותה תקופה, עשירים הם מקורותיו הערביים. מהפילוסופים הוא מזכיר את [[אפלטון]] ו[[אבן סינא]], מהתוכנים את [[אבן אפלח]], אבו ג'עפר אלשרואני ואת מחבר אלזיג אלפארסי אלמצ'פרי. כמו כן מובאים דברים בשם איש המדעים הפרסי [[אל-בירוני]]. שני חיבורים מוזכרים ללא שמות מחבריהם והם "כתאב אלכ'ואץ" (ספר הסגולות) ו"כתאב אלחיואן אלכביר" (ספר החיות הגדול). הוא מזכיר בפירושו את פירושו לתורה "אלוגיז אלמוגני" וכן את פירושיו לספר המצוות ולהלכות שחיטה לרמב"ם.<br />

כל חיבוריו עדיין לא יצאו לאור, מלבד "אלג'אמע" שעדיין לא תורגם מערבית ופירושו על הלכות קידוש החודש.<br />
