ה[[משנה]] אומרת שאסור לאדם להתבטל מפו"ר אם אין לו ילדים. הגמרא מדייקת מכך שגם אם יש לו ילדים הוא צריך לשאת אשה ודווקא מפו"ר מותר לו להתבטל. רב נחמן בשם שמואל אומר בצורה מפורשת שאדם צריך לשאת אשה גם כשיש לו בנים, אלא שאין מוכרים ס"ת לשם כך.<br />

בהמשך הגמרא מביאה שדעת רבי יהושע אינה כמו המשנה, ולשיטתו אדם חייב לשאת אשה ולהוליד ילדים גם כשכבר יש לו בנים. הגמרא פוסקת כרבי יהושע .<br />
הראשונים נחלקו האם כוונת רבי יהושע שגם מוכרים ס"ת בשביל להוליד עוד ילדים - או שהוא דיבר על מציאות שאין צורך בזה ואם אין אפשרות בלי למכור ס"ת, פטור מלשאת אשה הראויה להוליד.<br />

◄ [[תוס']]: אדם חייב לשאת אשה הראויה להוליד, אך אם אין לו אפשרות כזאת אלא אם ימכור ס"ת - שישא אשה שלא ראויה להוליד (במציאות שגם כזאת אינו מוצא בלי למכור, נחלקו הראשונים, יובא מיד).<br />

◄ [[בעל המאור]] ו[[רא"ש]]: גם כשיש לו ילדים, מוכר ס"ת כדי לשאת אשה הראויה להוליד. (לשיטתם, החילוק בין יש לו בנים לאין לו בנים הוא במציאות ששהה עם אשה עשר שנים ולא ילדה, שאם אין לו בנים מחויב לגרש אותה ולשאת אחרת. חילוק נוסף הוא במצב שמתה אשתו ורוצה לשאת אחרת בתוך השלושים).<br />

֎ רי"ף, רא"ש ורמב"ם: החובה לשאת אשה כשיש לו בנים היא מדרבנן בלבד, ומדאורייתא כשיש לו בן ובת קיים המצווה. אמנם, הרד"ך בדעת הרי"ף (הובא בפת"ש) סובר שמדאורייתא אסור לעמוד בלי אשה.<br />

֎ בת בנים שתעשה מריבה: אם יכול להתחתן עם אשה הראויה להוליד אך היא תגרום למריבות, עדיף להתחתן עם שאינה ראויה להוליד. אך לא יימנע לגמרי מלהינשא בגלל סיבה שכזאת. תרומת הדשן ורמ"א.</div>
