אולם המכירה הובילה לעלייתו למלוכה במצרים כדברי יוסף: "לא אתם מכרתם אותי הנה כי הא-לוקים וישימני לאב לפרעה ולאדון לכל ביתו", להצלתו את העולם ומשפחתו מרעב כדברי יוסף: "כי למחיה שלחני הא-לוקים לפניכם, כזה שנתיים הרעב בארץ ועוד חמש שנים אשר אין חריש וקציר", לירידת משפחתו למצרים, ולשעבוד עם ישראל במצרים כיישום של דברי הקב"ה ל[[אברהם]] בברית בין הבתרים, כלשון המדרש: ".<br />
מכירת יוסף מהווה שפל במצבה של משפחת יעקב, כאשר יוסף עבד, אביו חושב שהוא מת ומתאבל עליו, ואחיו חווים רגשות אשמה, אך מתוך המשבר צומחים שני מנהיגים - יהודה ויוסף.<br />

אהבת יעקב את רחל מלאה, יחד עם עקרותה של רחל ומותה בלידת בנימין - כל אלו הם רקע לאהבתו המיוחדת של יעקב ליוסף, והיחס המועדף שהוא נותן לו.<br />
אהבה זו מייצרת קנאה אצל אחיו, חלומות יוסף על השתחוויתם לו מגדילה את הקנאה לשנאה, ומובילה לרצון להרגו, ובפועל למכירתו. <br />
====אהבת יעקב את רחל====<br />
מתחילה, בשעה שיעקב בורח מעשיו אל משפחת אמו, הוא ראה את רחל בת דודתו באה עם הצאן של אביה, הוא גלל אבן כבדה שהרואים אינם מסוגלים לגלול אות אלא כולם יחדיו, השקה את הצאן ונשק לרחל.<br />
לאחר חודש שיעקב עבד אצל לבן, לבן הציע לו משכורת -ויעקב ביקש לעבוד שבע שנים על-מנת לקבל את רחל, "ויהיו בעיניו כימים אחדים באהבתו אותה".<br />
