לאחר שמשה רבינו שהה בהר סיני ארבעים יום הוא עמד לרדת אל העם עם לוחות האבן וכך נאמר:"וַיִּתֵּן אֶל-משֶׁה כְּכַלֹּתוֹ לְדַבֵּר אִתּוֹ בְּהַר סִינַי שְׁנֵי לֻחֹת הָעֵדֻת לֻחֹת אֶבֶן כְּתֻבִים בְּאֶצְבַּע אֱלֹהִים"{{מקור|תנ"ך:שמות ל"א י"ח$שמות ל"א, י"ח}}. הפרק הבא בפרשה, פרק ל"ב מתאר לנו מה קרה: '''וַיַּרְא הָעָם כִּי-בשֵׁשׁ משֶׁה לָרֶדֶת מִן-הָהָר''' - רש"י מסביר מדוע העם סבר כן ונותן שתי סיבות<br />
* סיבה טבעית - "כי כשעלה משה להר אמר להם לסוף ארבעים יום אני בא בתוך שש שעות. כסבורים הם, שאותו יום שעלה מן המנין הוא, והוא אמר להם שלימים, ארבעים יום ולילו עמו, ויום עלייתו אין לילו עמו, שהרי בשבעה בסיון עלה, נמצא יום ארבעים בשבעה עשר בתמוז" - פשוט טעות ביום<br />
* וסיבה לא-טבעית - "בששה עשר בא השטן וערבב את העולם והראה דמות חשך ואפילה וערבוביא לומר וודאי מת משה, לכך בא ערבוביא לעולם."<br />
* ולפי הפסוק "כי זה משה האיש" מפרש רש"י "כמין דמות משה הראה להם השטן, שנושאים אותו באויר רקיע השמים".<br />
* חסר יהיה מדריך להמשך הדרך - והיה מורה לנו דרך, אשר נעלה בה, עתה צריכין אנו לאלהות, אשר ילכו לפנינו.<br />

==מעשיהו של אהרון הכהן==<br />

אהרון שנשאר במחנה נדרש להשיב לפניות של העם. וכך מתוארת בפרשה מהלך הדברים: "וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו קוּם עֲשֵׂה-לָנוּ אֱלֹקים" {{מקור|תנ"ך:שמות ל"ב א$שמות ל"ב, א}} משה רבינו לא יורד ו"לֹא יָדַעְנוּ מֶה-הָיָה לוֹ".<br />

[[רבי אברהם בן עזרא]] מתיחס לתפקידו של [[אהרון הכהן]], שהרי התנהגותו במעשה העגל אינו נזקף לחובתו. והוא מבאר:<br />
* "יש מהקדמונים שאמרו: שנהרג חור והנה אהרן פחד. <br />
* ויש מי שאמר: כי פחד על ישראל אם יהרגוהו שה' ימיתם כלם. <br />

ובכל זאת ההסבר אינו נראה לו "ועל דרך הפשט, אם מעשה העגל '''עבודה זרה''', למה פחד אהרן שיהרג והלא מתו אחריו כמה חסידים מישראל שלא הגיעה מעלתם למעלת אהרן בחסידות, לפרסת כף רגל אהרן על ייחוד השם?! והנה חברי דניאל הושלכו לכבשן האש בעבור שלא השתחוו לצלם, ואיך יעשה אהרן פסל שהמעשה קשה מהשתחוייה?! והלא אהרן קדוש השם היה ונביא על ישראל ומצוות רבות נתנו על ידו עם משה אחיו, והנה יהיה חור טוב ממנו ואם הוא עשה ע"ז, חייב היה משה להורגו קודם עובדי העגל?!<br />

הוא מציג פירושים אחדים למעשיה אך דוחה אותם. בהמשך הוא אומר:"ועתה אחל לפרש דרך קצרה קצת הסוד. <br />
חלילה חלילה שעשה אהרן ע"ז גם ישראל לא בקשו ע"ז, רק חשבו שמת משה שהסיעם מים סוף כאשר פירש . כי ראו שהמן אינו יורד בהר סיני ומשה התעכב שם ארבעים יום. ואין כח באדם לחיות זה הזמן בלא מאכל, כי הוא לא אמר להם מתי ירד. גם הוא לא ידע, כי השם אמר לו: עלה אלי ההרה ושב שם עד שאתן לך לוחות הברית." - גם הוא סבר כי אולי משה רבינו אכן לא יישוב.<br />

ובכלל, לא נחשב מעשה העכל לעבודה זרה שהרי הביאו זבחים והשתחוו לו, ואמרו: אלה אלוהיך ישראל. <br />

בשלב הבא אהרון יוזם איסוף תכשיטי זהב מאת "נְשֵׁיכֶם בְּנֵיכֶם וּבְנֹתֵיכֶם" . רש"י סבור כי היית הלהם כוונה בכך:"אמר אהרן בלבו הנשים והילדים חסים על תכשיטיהן, שמא יתעכב הדבר, ובתוך כך יבא משה, והם לא המתינו ופרקו מעל עצמן". ואכן "כָּל-הָעָם" - עושה כן.<br />

השלב הבא היה יצירת "עֵגֶל מַסֵּכָה" . הפרשנים לא מקבלים זאת בפשטות:<br />
* מכשפי מצרים עשו זאת, לפי רש"י:"כיון שהשליכו לכור, באו מכשפי ערב רב שעלו עמהם ממצרים ועשאוהו בכשפים".<br />
* הסבר קצת מורכב:"מיכה היה שם שיצא מתוך דמוסי בנין שנתמעך בו במצרים, והיה בידו שם, וטס שכתב בו משה עלה שור, עלה שור, להעלות ארונו של יוסף מתוך נילוס, והשליכו לתוך הכור ויצא העגל"<br />

ואהרון קובע חג למחרת.[[רבי עובדיה ספורנו]] מוצא גם את הסיבה לדחיה:"חַג לַה' מָחָר. וְלא תְעַרְבְּבוּ שִׂמְחָתו בְּאֵל אַחֵר". ה[[רמב"ן]] מביא את הפירוש המקובל של דחיית דבר למחר, עד אז הכל צפוי:"ויתכן שאמר "מחר" להאריך להם, אולי יבא משה ויעזבו את העגל, והם השכימו בבקר ויעלו עולות ויגישו שלמים. ולא אמר הכתוב ויעלו לו עולות ויגישו לו שלמים, והעניין, מפני שהיו בהם מכוונים לשם הקב"ה כאשר אמר אהרן, ומהם משחיתים וזובחים לעגל. ועל אלה אמר הקב"ה למשה (להלן פסוק ח): וישתחוו לו ויזבחו לו, כי הם החטאים. ואם אולי היה אהרן המקריב קורבנות, אמר סתם ויעלו עולות ויגישו שלמים, כי הוא מכוון לשם ה', והם דעתם אל העגל אשר עשו, והיו הבעלים מפגלין:<br />

ואכן העם משכים למחרת והתיאור המקרא הוא מלא ומפורט : ו"וַיֵּשֶׁב הָעָם לֶאֱכֹל וְשָׁתוֹ וַיָּקֻמוּ לְצַחֵק"<br />

**שובר את הלוחות, שורף את העגל, זורה על המים, "וַיַּשְׁק אֶת-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל".<br />
**לוקח את בני לוי ומצווה אותם :" וְהִרְגוּ אִישׁ-אֶת-אָחִיו וְאִישׁ אֶת-רֵעֵהוּ וְאִישׁ אֶת-קְרֹבוֹ" <br />
