ידוע כי רובם של התרי"ג מצוות אי אפשר לקיים בימינו, היות ונוהגים רק בזמן שבית המקדש היה קיים וכד'. אותם המצוות שכן אפשר לקיים ליקט בעל ה"חפץ חיים" ל "ספר המצוות הקצר". מידי שבוע נביא בעז"ה מצווה אחת מתוך הספר. על גבה יבוא המדור "מצווה לספר" שיספר לנו סיפור הקשור למצווה. לידו יופיע המדור "מצווה להורות" שיעסוק בהלכות הקשורות למצווה.

מצות עשה לשבות ממלאכה ביום הכיפורים שנאמר: "שבת שבתון הוא לכם" (ויקרא כ"ג) מצות עשה להתענות ביום הכיפורים שנאמר: "אך בעשור לחודש השביעי הזה יום כיפורים הוא וגו' ועיניתם את נפשותיכם". (ויקרא כ"ג) מצות לא תעשה שלא לעשות מלאכה ביום הכיפורים, שנאמר: "וכל מלאכה לא תעשו" (ויקרא כ"ג) מצות לא תעשה שלא לאכול ולשתות ביום הכיפורים, שנאמר: "כי כל הנפש אשר לא תעונה... ונכרתה" (ויקרא כ"ג)
"לא יגוש את רעהו ואת אחיו כי קרא שמיטה לה'.."
מצות לא תעשה שלא למנוע מלהלוות לישראל מפחד השמיטה שלא תשמט, שנאמר: "השמר לך פן יהיה דבר עם לבבך בליעל לאמר קרבה שנת השבע שנת השמיטה ורעה עינך" (דברים ט"ו). מצות לא תעשה שלא לתבוע חוב שעברה עליו שביעית, שנאמר: "לא יגוש את רעהו ואת אחיו כי קרא שמיטה לה'" (דברים ט"ו).
