1. הראי"ה קוק, עין איה שבת, ה, כה, על מסכת שבת דף נה ע"א
אמרה לפניו, רבש"ע, אם לפניך גלוי להם מי גלוי?!
א. לא מצד הגורם הפרטי שההתרשלות של ההשפעה גרם לאותו הדור אנו עסוקים, כ"א על עצמותה של השיטה, שהיא מתאזרחת בידי המעולים שבדורות, להשקיע בקרבם את קול אלהים חיים הסואן ומרעיש את לבבם, לרגלי ראותם את העוֶל והתועבות. הם לא עשו את מניעתם מצד ידיעה ברורה בהפסק התועלת של השפעתם, כ"א מצד רפיון ושיטה כוזבת בעצם חובתה של ההשפעה, ואם דבר מפסיד כזה לא יֵעקר מן הסכמת הכלל של הטובים והכשרים שבאומה, אז הלא מוכרחות הרעות להתגבר בכל דור ודור.
ב. כי הלא השפעת התוכחה היא אחת מתנאֵי המציאות בתיקון המוסר, כמו שתנאי העבודה החרישה והזריעה הנם תנאים מוכרחים למעמד החיים הגופניים של החברה האנושית, א"כ צריכה שיטה כזאת להיות נאבדת מן העולם, כמו כל הנטיות היותר מפסידות.
ג. וכיון שבא המצב של ההשחתה הכללית עד אותה המדה הנוראה, עד שאין רפואה להשבתת הרעה כ"א באיבודם של הדבקים בה ונושאים אותה, הנה גם הרעה הרפיונית, שבאה לכלל תכונה ושיטה, היא כאחת מהם.
ד. ע"כ, אין מועיל על ההפסד של כבישת כח הטוב מלעשות את תפקידו כל מה שיש צדדים לטובה בעצמותם של הנושאים, מה שבשבילם ראוי הדיבור שיהיה יוצא מפי הקב"ה לטובה, אם לא הגדילו את הרעה המעשית בשתיקתם בפועל, מפני שלא היו דבריהם נשמעים אפילו אם היו מוחים. אבל כיון שמבלי דעתם את אחרית פעולתם היתה דעתם מתקררת שלא למחות, זהו אות שעצם צורת הצדק כבר חלושה היא בטבע נפשם,
ה. ומצד זה המובן הלא אינם צדיקים גמורים, ויש גם להם חלק במחלה המוסרית של הדור, שהסיבה הגנוזה שחוללה בהם אותו הרפיון היא בעצמה הסבה שגרמה ההשחתה הגדולה באותם שהיו בהם אותן התכונות המקולקלות עצמן בשיעור יותר מרובה.
ו. א"כ, בהִשארם יצמיחו את מארת המחלה המוסרית באותו הצביון בעצמו, שכשיתפשט ברבים, בבנים ובני בנים, יהיה דומה ממש כאותו הקלקול של עכשיו בדור, ואז הלא ילך לאיבוד כל התועלת הנרצה מכל ההשחתה והכליון שהדין עושה ברשעי הדור.
