1. הראי"ה קוק, עין איה שבת, ג, ו, על מסכת שבת דף מא ע"א
רחץ בחמין ולא שתה מהם, דומה לתנור שהסיקוהו מבחוץ ולא הסיקוהו מבפנים [רש"י: שאינו מטיב לכלום].
א. יפה היא ההערה המוסרית הכללית הנעוצה בעומק טבע שמירת הגוף, כי כל נקיון ורחיצה חיצונית תִגָמר אז לטובה, בהיותה מחוברת עם רחיצה פנימית. וזה הדבר נוהג בין בהנהגה הגופנית, שצריך האדם שיכיר את הרחיצה לשם תועלת שמירת גופו יותר מלשם הקישוט החיצוני שיש בה, ותביאהו ג"כ לחשוב שזאת הרחיצה החיצונית בחלק הנקיון שיש בה כלפי חוץ, היא מצרכת את הנקיון של הרוח , של טהרת הלב ממחשבות מכוערות , טהרת השכל מדמיונות עכורים וכאלה.
ב. ואם יפנה האדם תמיד , בכל ענין , אפילו יהיה חיצוני, כלפי התועלת הפנימית שיש בו, אז יבור לו תמיד הנהגה טובה ומועלת, שאפילו כלפי חוץ תהיה יותר נאה, מאילו לכתחילה כיון בה רק לצאת על ידה כלפי חוץ, כשם שהתנור כשיוסק מבפנים, יתן את חומו אפילו כלפי חוץ יותר מאילו הוסק מבחוץ.
ג. וכלל גדול הוא, שאותו המשקל השוה שבו אוהב האדם את נפשו ומכבדה מצד עצמה, עם היתרון של הקירוב שאדם קרוב אצל עצמו, רק הוא מבסס את כל היסוד לבנין הצדק החיצוני נגד כל האדם. ובזמן שהוא מפזר את כל כחותיו כלפי חוץ , באמת מתגנבת בזה אהבה עצמית גסה , שהכל יאהבוהו ויכבדוהו, אבל היא לא תביא את הכונה הרצויה, וישאר עבד לרבים באין רוח נכון בקרבו.
ד. ובסדרי טבע, שמירת הגוף במה שיש בה פנים לצד החיצוני ולצד הפנימי, שם הטבע עצמו במאמרו של אדון כל ב"ה, הכולל כל מיני תועליות מפוזרים בכל פרט מפרטי החיים בחסדו המלא כל הארץ, שיהיה האדם מתְלמד להכריע כלפי צדו הפנימי, כדי שיוכל לחשב חשבונו של עולם ע"פ אותו הבסיס שהוא מוצא אותו חזק בנפשו. ו רחץ בחמין ולא שתה מהם, דומה לתנור שהסיקוהו מבחוץ ולא הסיקוהו מבפנים.

"וכל מעשיך יהיו לשם שמים", כהלל. כשהיה הלל יוצא למקום היו אומרים לו: להיכן אתה הולך? - לעשות מצוה אני הולך. - מה מצוה הלל? - לבית הכסא אני הולך. - וכי מצוה היא זו? אמר להן: הן, בשביל שלא יתקלקל הגוף. - איכן אתה הולך הלל? - לעשות מצוה אני הולך. - מה מצוה הלל? - לבית המרחץ אני הולך. - וכי מצוה היא זו? אמר להן: הן, בשביל לנקות את הגוף. תדע לך שהוא כן, מה אם אוקיינות העומדות בפלטיות של מלכים, הממונה עליהם להיות שָׁפָן (שף אותן) וממרקן, המלכות מעלה לו סלירא בכל שנה ושנה, ולא עוד אלא שהוא מתגדל עם גדולי המלכות - אנו שנבראנו בצלם ודמות , שנאמר: כי בצלם אלהים עשה את האדם, על אחת כמה וכמה.
