Why did Mar Brei (the son of) Ravina [=MBD] fast on Shabbat?

The Gemara in Pesachim 68b tells us that MBD fasted the entire year apart from Shavuot, Erev Yom Kippur and Purim. Furthermore we know that he was very G-d fearing and miracles were done for him. This teaches us that he was especially pious. He was a fourth generation Amora and was the pupil of R. Sheshet and a colleague of Rava. He is the one who composed the E-lokai Netzor at the end of Shmoneh Esreh.(See Berachot 17a, 64a, Shabbat 61a).
However, as pious as one may be what was the justification for fasting on Shabbat and Yamim Tovim?

1.When is one allowed to fast on Shabbat?
Shabbat 11a.: Fasting is as potent against a (bad) dream as fire is to staw; and R. Chisda said, Providing it is on that very day; and R. Joseph added: And even on Shabbat

Berachot 31b: R. Eleazar also said in the name of R. Jose b. Zimra: If one keeps a fast on Sabbath, a decree of seventy years standing against him is annulled; yet all the same he is punished for neglecting to make the Sabbath a delight. What is his remedy? R. Nahman b. Yitzchak said: Let him keep another fast to atone for this one

The Shulchan Aruch says that one may fast a dream-fast on Shabbat in order to change his gzar zin. However, another fast must be done to make up for fasting on Shabbat.
2.. May one fast on Yom Tov?
This has to do with a major Machloket between R. Yehoshua and R. Eliezer if it is compulsory to have a Se'uda (with bread) on Yom Tov.
Betza 15b: R. Eliezer says: On Yom Tov a man has no obligation on Yom Tov other than eating and drinking or siting t and learning. R. Yehoshua says: Divide it, half of it for G-D, [and] half of it for yourselves. R. Yochanan said: Both drew their inference from the same verse[s]. One verse satys "A solemn assembly to the Lord your God, "and another verse reads: You shall have a solemn assembly. How is this [to be reconciled]? R. Eliezer is of the opinion: Either the whole of it is for God or the whole of it is for yourselves; while R.Yehoshua is of the opinion: Divide it; half of it is for the Lord and half of it is for yourselves
3.What is the opinion of The Shulchan Aruch?
The Shulcahn Aruch follows the opinion of R. Yehoshua to divide the day; Half to Hashem half to yourself.

4.How then do we explain MBD's behavior who fasted all year?

The following is related in the Gemara Pesachim 68b

:Pesachim 68b : R. Eliezer said: A man has no obligation on Yom Tov other than eating and drinking or sitting and learning R. Yehoshua said: Divide it: [devote] half of it to eating and drinking, and half of it to the Beth Hamidrash R. Eleazar said: All agree in respect to Shavuot [azereth] that we require [it to be] ‘for you’ too. What is the reason? It is the day on which the Torah was given... Rabbah said: All agree in respect to the Sabbath that we require [it to be] ‘for you’ too.... R. Yoseph said: All agree that on Purim we require ‘for you’ too. What is the reason? "Days of feasting and gladness" is written.
Mar son of Rabina would fast the whole year , except on Shavuot, Purim, and the eve of Yom Kippur., Shavuot [because] it is the day on which the Torah was given: Purim, [because] ‘days of feasting and gladness’ is written in connection to Purim. The eve of Yom Kippur , for Chiyya b. Rab of Difti taught: And you shall afflict your souls on the ninth day of the month: Do we then fast on the ninth? Surely we fast on the tenth!
There are several opinions offered to explain Mar Brei (the son of) Ravina's behavior:

1)Rahsba and Tosafot opinion : MBD fasted a dream-fast on those days.

2) The opinion of Rav Hai Gaon:
MBD acted extremely for personal reasons. However, this behavior is not to be learned from to apply to others.
3) R. Zerachya Halevi. Author of the Maor :
There are several types of fasts. One is a fast because of a dream or Teshuva which is allowed all the time even on Shabbat.
However, The Ra'avad disagreed with the Maor, by saying that his opinion is worthless. Also the Me'iri disagrees with the Maor
.
4) The Ra'avad's opinion:
MBD did not fast the entire year. He fasted on Mondays and Thursdays whenever they fell (apart from the 3 specified days) However, in no way did he fast on Shabbat.

5) The Me'iri's opinion:
MBD's fast was in the framework of an "Issur Kolel. Which means that Shabbat was not specified to fast, however since the person took upon himself to fast X amount of days and Shabbat Shabbat is among those days ,is not excluded and therefore he was permitted to fast on Shabbat.

This opinion in the Shulchan is that in the framework of an "Issur Kolel, one may fast on Shabbat.
6. What is the prevalent minhag in regard to a dream-fast in our times?

Rav Ovadia Yosef Shlit"a summarizes that even if a person had a bad dream he should not fast on Shabbat but dedicate Shabbat to Torah and Tehillim. Only in extreme cases may one fast on Shabbat.

7.Which opinions does the Bet Yoseph (Author of Shulchan Aruch) quote?
The Bet Yoseph quotes 3 opinions:
1) The author of the Kol Bo says that for negative reasons one may not fast on Shabbat, however for the sake of Teshuva and piety it is considered a pleasure and is permitted. However, he says, you don't normally find someone on that level of piety who fasts Shabbat & Yom tov.

2)The Hagahot Maimoniot,( R. Meir HaCohen, Talmid of Maram of Rottenberg) says if one fasts the entire week and if he does not fast on Shabbat it would change one's body cycle, fasting on Shabbat is allowed as found in the case of pious people one of which was R. Yehuda Hachasid and as set by the example set by MBD. However, for other reasons it is forbidden.
The Rashba: MBD fasted a dream-fast on those days.

8.What did the Shulchan Aruch posek?
The Shulchan Aruch followed the opinion of the Hagahot Maimoniot, that if one fasts the entire week and if he does not fast on Shabbat it would change one's body cycle, fasting on Shabbat is allowed in spite of the opposition of the Rashba.

9.Are there other Rishonim who allow to fast on Shabbat due to piety?
The author of the Tzror Hachaim, R. Chaim b. Shmuel, the pupil of the Rashba says that a fast for the sake of Teshuva is allowed on Shabbat as in the case of MBD. The basis for the Heter it seems that it is because it is similar to a dream-fast.
10. Who disagrees with the opinion of the Tzror Hachaim?

R. Avraham Zacut disagrees with R. Chaim and says that the reason for MBD's fast was because of a bad dream fast. Since there is no mention of MBD being a Ba'al teshuva.
11. What other Rishonim permit fasting on Shabbat due to piety?

Sefer Hahashlama, of R. Meshulam b. Moshe of Bezier[13th Century]

R. Meshulam offers two explanations to MBD's behavior. A. MBD holds the opinion of R. Eliezer that one may dedicate a Chag totally to Hashem. B. In the name of his father he says that for the sake of piety one may fast. His opinion is similar to that of the Kol Bo whom he precedes historically.(See Kol Bo Hilchot Chol hamoed 60) According to the Hashlama this type of fast complies even with the opinion of R. Yehoshua who says that the Chagim are half for man and half for Hashem. (See also sefer Hame'orot of R. Meir ben Shimon Hame'ili-of Provence, who quotes the Haslama on Betza, pg. 29 )

12. Are there ipoinions in the Achronim that follow the Tzror Hachaim and Hashlama?
R. Moshe b. Machir [16th Century] in Seder Hayom:
The Seder Hayom basically says that if a person wants to correct his ways and takes upon himself to fast a certain amount of days, when Shabbat is one of them, it is considered an act of piety.

13. Who disagrees with the opinion of Seder Hayom?

The Author of the Shelah, R. Yeshayahu Hurvitz zt"l says MBD's fast must be because of a dream-fast. To say otherwise, would make him a sinner.

14. What did R. Yehuda Hechasid advise others in regard to fasting on Shabbat and Yom Tov?
R. Yehuda Hachasid wrote that refraining from eating is not the right thing to do.

R. Reuven Magaliot zt"l, who edited the Sefer Chassidim, wrote that although, R. Yehuda Hachasid wrote that people should not take upon themselves fasts of which they were not commanded, he allowed himself to do so since he himself lived in extreme piety and was removed from all worldly affairs besides those required to sustain his body in order to serve Hashem.

In summary , the Shulcan Aruch follows the opinion R. Meir Hacohen, The author of Hagahot Maimoniot who allows fasting on Shabbat under specific circumstances.
