Question
Shalom rabbi! Can I heat my chicken soup with chicken inside on a bleach on Shabbat? thank you
Answer
Shalom and thank you for your question. Heating chicken soup on Shabbat might have two problems: 1)Cooking which is forbidden by the Torah and 2)an action that seems like cooking (heating food), which is forbidden by rabbinic decree. Most authorities hold that heating soup or anything liquid (vs. solid food) on Shabbat is forbidden by the Torah even if it has already been cooked. Therefore, heating cold soup or placing in in a place where it will heat to more than 45 degrees Celsius is forbidden. The Rambam, however, holds that it is permitted to warm up soup which is already cooked. The Yemenites who go by the Rambam heat soup on Shabbat. Even when there is no cooking (like with cooked solid food), the sages prohibited to place food on the fire if it appears like cooking. Many Rabbis hold that that on Shabbat it's forbidden to put food directly on the blech (hotplate) but it can be placed on an empty tray on the blech. Others (like Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, ztl and Rabbi Dov Lior, Shlita) hold that placing food on the blech doesn't look like cooking and the food can be placed directly on then hot plate.
