Keeping Torah in a home

Rabbi Elchanan Lewis

Question
My husband is commissioning a Sefer Torah to be written. We would like to keep the Sefer in our home. What are the laws for doing this properly? Many thanks.
Answer
Mazal Tov. As long as you keep the Sefer torah in a modest place (not your bed room) and a clean place (not the toilet) and placed in a proper respectful ark (Aron Kodesh) – you are fine. However, it is meritorious for the people that own the Sefer torah if it is used regularly and if it is held in the most appropriate place – thus it is a common practice to give ones privet Sefer torah on loan for a shule to hold and use on a regular bases if they don't have a Minyan at home.
