Question
If you eat Mezonot bread with your meal, can you make a Hamotzi, or are you not allowed to make Hamotzi on Mezonot bread?
Answer
Eating Mezonot bread by itself requires the saying of "Borei Minei Mezonot" and not "Hamotzi" unless a very large quantity- 225 grams is eaten. Your question, however, is whether to say "Hamotzi" if you eat the "Mezonot bread" not by itself but together with your meal. The Halacha as followed by Ashkenazim is that if you eat a quantity of Mezonot bread equivalent to the quantity of regular bread that is normally eaten at a meal then you must do "Netillat Yadayim", say "Hamotzi" before eating the bread, and say "Birkat Hamazon" after the meal (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chayyim168 6; Mishna Berura 168 24-25). The Halacha as followed by most Spharadim is to say "Hamotzi" om Mezonot bread even during a meal only if one has eaten a large quantity of Mezonot bread- 225 grams or more (Rav Mordechai Eliyahu, commenting on Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 48 3- recommends that one not eat an amount of Mezonot bread between 170 and 225 grams because by doing so one puts himself into a "Safek", an unresolved question; if one has eaten this amount, he should say "Borei Minei Mezonot").
