Question
Why doesn’t G-d speak to/through prophets now as He did in the Bible? We know He speaks with H-s creations and through fulfillment of old prophesies, but why not verbally as He did with Moses?
Answer
Maimonides in the Guide to the Perplexed (II 36) teaches that prophecy is impossible as long as the Jewish people is in exile, subjected to nations who are afflicted by ethical and cultural infirmities. The sadness that inevitably results from our situation in the exile negates the possibility of prophecy. The Ingathering of the Exiles to Israel is a necessary precondition for the restoration of the prophecy.
