Question
On Tu Bishvat, can we eat dried strawberries?
Answer
b"h
Strawberries have been the subject of many Kashrut agencies lately who have shown the presence of bugs in strawberries even after soaking in soap and washing. The opinion even of a prominent Rabbinic authority who has allowed the eating of strawberries after proper washing has been said to be based on incomplete information. Therefore if you wish to eat dry strawberries you must be in contact with the kashrut agency which gave the kosher certificate and ask what measures were taken to remove the insects. If you do not hear satisfying answers you should not eat them.
In any case, it should be said that there is no particular custom to eat dry fruits particularly on Tu B'shvat. The custom is to eat fruits, especially those of Eretz Yisrael, however since some of them in the Israeli winter are not available (such as grapes and figs) they are eaten dry.
