Question
Shalom, For our chuppah, we agreed on Tammuz 19 as the date with our rabbinat. But in the meantime we have heard that its forbidden to celebrates marriages from the 17th of Tammuz. Some rabbis say it is possible although it is the three weeks, it is not yet the 1st of Av. Others say its forbidden. Others say marriage and music possible but no dancing afterwards. We are sepharadim from Tunisia. What is your final word on the matter please? Thank you so much.
Answer
ב"ה Shalom, First of all, Mazal Tov. All should go well in good time. Secondly, although, I am more than happy to answer your question, I would not view answers on the internet as the final word, but I would choose to hear from my own Rabbi. Nevertheless, indeed, according to the Sephardi custom, one may get married on the 19th of Tammuz up till the eve of first of the month of Av. This is clearly written in the Shulchan Aruch. שלחן ערוך אורח חיים סימן תקנא סעיף ב)) However, according to the Ashkenzazi custom, weddings are not carried out from the 17th of Tammuz until after the 9th of Av. Some Sephardi communities also adopted the stringency of the Ashkenazim. I am waiting for an answer from a colleague, to hear if this is also the Tunisian custom.(And I shall update the answer, once I hear from him.) Nevertheless, according to Rav Ovadya Yoseph zt"l, even the Sephardi communities who adopted the Ashkenazi stringency, in Eretz Yisrael , they are not obligated to uphold the customs of their parents who came from abroad. שו"ת יחוה דעת חלק א' סימן לו)). Therefore, if you do not know of any specific stringency in this regard on your family, you may clearly get married on the 19th of Tammuz. There are those who may want to wait for the happier days after the 9th of Av, but , according to Rav Ovadya Yoseph zt"l, there is no need to do so and he who keeps a Mitzvah shall know no harm. All the Best – MAZAL TOV
