Question
What would the law be for Ashkenazim on this question? We are Ashkenazim who live in Israel.
Answer
Shalom,
Thank you for your question. Ashkanazim follow the ruling of the Rema who rules that we do not kosher glassware for Pessach. In times of need, depending on the use of the glass (ie, in an oven, or just plates, hot or cold etc), and what it was used for (real chametz or not) there are certain leniencies, and ways that the glass can be soaked for three days to kosher it. But, as this is only applicable in times of need, and as there are many variables, one should contact a Rabbi for each particular case. Especially in modern times when utensils are relatively cheap, and there is also an option for disposables, we are less likely to rule that Ashkanazim can kosher any glassware for Pessach. I am unaware on any differences in the application of Ashkanazi halacha in or out of Israel.
Blessings.
