Question
I have some "acquaintances" from community college who make it a point to make me feel miserable by making jokes at my expense. This group also used to take me out drinking and once took me out drinking for an entire week which could have been bad for medical reasons. The "leader" of this group also likes to try to get into my private life matters, tries to force me to move in with him, tries to force me to do things that I can't do because of my circumstances, and overall disrespects me. I have tried cutting them out of my life, but these people weasel their way back into my life. What makes me even more upset is that they have the audacity to call me a friend and then mistreat me. What should I do?
Answer
Thank you for your question, Obviously, you don't want these people in your life as they make jokes at your expense and have a bad influence on you. The problem is that you can not get them out of your life, easily; they find a way to return to your life. My advice to you is to try and fill your life with the light of the Torah and mitzvot. My assumption is that once your life is filled with the light of Torah, they will come to understand that you are a changed person and clearly 'different' from them. At that point they won't bother you. The opposite will occur, they will respect and admire you! All the best!
