Question
Is the reported damage to crops and the food chain posed by the spotted lantern fly enough to allow a leniency of killing them on shabbos in a way similar to a mosquito which might pose a physical danger?

The leniencies in regard to killing of poisonous or harmful insects on Shabbat is in regard to physical harm only not in regard to monetary loss.
Though I am hardly an expert on insect infestation, it seems doubtful to me that the killing of insect will change things. However, if there will be monetary loss, a gentile may be employed in the permissible of employing gentiles on Shabbat.
