Question
Hi, All I am aware of is that Mishloah Manot need to be delivered during the day. Is this from the time of halachic dawn, or halachic sunrise? Thank you Naomi Cezana
Answer
Shalom, As with most mitzvot of the day-time, the correct time to fulfill them is after the sun rises (netz). However, if needs be, or after the fact, then if the mitzvah was performed after first light (amud ha'shachar) one fulfilled the mitzvah and it does not have to be repeated. In this case though, there is usually an easy option. One can give the Mishloach Manot (Purim gifts of food) to a third party and ask them to deliver the gift for you during the daylight hours. Even though we usually say that it is better to do a mitzvah oneself, rather than via a messenger, in this case it is not so. As the Megillah tells us to "send" gifts, the use of a messenger is praiseworthy - and in fact, some have the custom to specifically try and send the gifts via a messenger. So if you are pushed for time, or will not see the person during the day after sunrise, you could always give the gift to someone else (even many days before Purim) and ask them to deliver it for you during Purim day. Happy Purim!!
