Liability for Object Broken in Scuffle with Thief

Question
If someone breaks his own object trying to pull it away from the one that stole it, who has to pay?
Answer
The thief has to pay, for as soon as the owner started pulling his own object, the thief should have let go and it wouldn't have broken. In addition, the thief is liable and responsible even for accidental damage which takes place once it's in his possession. Nevertheless, one can only decide monetary issues after hearing both sides!
