Question
What do the black stripes of the Tallit symbolize?
Answer
Some say the black stripes symbolize the color of the t'chelet, which is the color of the sky close to sunset (according to Rashi - according to the Rambam it is the color of the sky at midday, light blue, which accounts for the blue stripes some have).
Another explanation is that black reminds us of mourning for the destroyed temple.
