Question
I am in the year for my father. Can I go on Chol HaMoed to a play with my children?
Answer
ב"ה
First, allow me to express my condolences. המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר שאר אבלי ציון וירושלים.
The year of Avelut places its limitations upon us in regard to all sorts of joyous occasions. An Avel is even restricted from partaking in the Hakafot on Shimchat torah, besides going around once with the Torah while psukim are being said, but not during the dancing.
The Mishna Brura says , (משנה ברורה סי' קכח ס"ק קנח) that even Shabbat and Yom tov do not diminish the Avelut , because an Avel on a parent for the entire year is considered not to be in a state of mind of simcha. I don't see how it would be allowed to go to a play for kids where there usually is joyous atmosphere especially one where there may be music.
May you know of no more sorrow.
Besorot Tovot.

Is it permitted to marry during the mourning period?
