Question
Is one allowed to play board games on Shabbat?
Answer
Obviously, learning Torah is always the best. Nevertheless, in general, board games are one of the best ways for families to spend their Shabbat, as they are very helpful in uniting and crystallizing the family unit and friendships, through fun and constructive activities, as opposed to the unfortunate lack of communication all week, due to smart-phones! There are those, like Shmirat Shabbat K'Hilchita , who prohibit those board games which use "play-money" which is similar to real money, and games where you "keep points" for maybe they may write down the points, so as not to forget, but on the other hand, most poskim permit them, and for sure one can rely on the more lenient opinions with children who look for activities on Shabbat.
