Keeping Shabbat in Space

Rabbi Jonathan Blass

10 Adar II 5763
Question
I read that the Israeli astronaut was keeping kosher in space and wanted to observe the Shabbat. But with the shuttle orbitting so fast, and so often over 24 hour period, how would he observe the Shabbat, since its an hour in space is like a 24 hour period?
Answer
Ilan Ramon z”l received a Psak instructing him to keep the Shabbat as if he were on the ground at the Space Center in Florida. Similar decisions have been given in the past regarding people at the North or South Pole- they keep shabbat according to the longitude from which they arrived.
