Question
Dear Rabbi, I am a college student who has recently been learning about Judaism. I came across your answer to another question about what birth control methods were acceptable. You said that the family should directly consult a Halakhic authority and that this subject was not something that should be addressed over email. I was just wondering what the reasoning behind this was. Is it because these things should be addressed on an individual reason, or is it for some other reason? Thank you so much for your help and your time.
Answer
Shalom, There are a number of different principles to be taken into account when answering questions on contraception, there is the obligation to bear children, there is the prohibition against wasting seed etc. Since these are complex issues one needs a personal Rabbi who knows the couple's situation and desires in order to navigate through these questions to arrive at an answer that is relevant and specific to each couple.
