Benching not on Bread
Question
Dear Rabbi,
A friend and I were wondering about the following:
We can’t eat bread for medical reasons, so is it possible to wash, and then say over oatmeal (made into a kugel especially for this purpose) either borei minei hamizunot or ha-kol? Then, is it possible to bensch?
Thanks,
Frieda
Answer
On oatmeal (even Kugel) one says Mezonot and Al Hamichya. But if the oatmeal is made into bread and looks like bread, if eaten as a meal one should wash, make Hamotzi and bench at the end of the meal.
