Question
I need to cut some apples to make a pareve dish for a meat meal, however I only have dairy knives. Can I use a clean dairy knife to cut cold fruit for a meat dish?
Answer
It is an obligation to have separate utensils for milk and meat, even for eating cold food. Since it is difficult not to get confused when using utensils for both, the separation should be complete.
However, in the case where no pareve or meat knife is available, the milk knife can be used on a one time basis, since the apples are cold and do not have a sharp taste "charif" (e.g. onion) with the understanding that a pareve knife will be acquired as soon as possible.
