Family Heirloom
Question
I have a friend of Hispanic origin who later converted to Judaism. About a month ago, I’m sorry to say, his grandfather died. Before passing on, he gave my friend a chain with a silver cross on it. This cross has great sentimental to his father as well him.
Under Jewish law, what should my friend do about the cross?
Answer
With all due respect to the family heirloom, he should find it a different home, as it is not an item for a Jew to keep.
The chain without the cross can be kept.
