Question
My daughter has married a non-Jew in a civil ceremony six years ago. She is now 38 and has joined the IVF programme to have a child. How should I react to this? As I do not accept her husband how what should I do with her children when and if she has them?
Answer
There is no pat answer to this question. Your daughter’s children will be Jewish, and your grandchildren. If you can make them aware of that heritage, contact can be beneficial. I think you will need some good personal counseling on the issues here and suggest you find a Rabbi who will be sympathetic to the difficulties of your family situation.
