It is a custom in our small community to put a glass of water with a piece of fabric or cloth in it in a window and leave it there for the duration of the Shiva. Do you have any idea where this Minhag comes from and what it means?

I am not familiar with a source for this Minhag in Halacha. It might just be a Minhag of your congregation. Rabbi Dov Lior
