Question
If Reuven was not at the sale of Yosef and his brothers took a vow not to reveal what happened, how did Reuven know Yosef was sold and not killed?
Answer
The Midrash (Tanchuma Vayeshev 2) says that the oath they took was not to tell Yaakov, Reuven therefore was allowed to know.
