Traveling on a Fast Day
Question
B’Sha’a Tova U’Mutzlachat, I plan on flying to Israel in a few weeks. I just noticed that my flight falls out on December 22 - Asara B’Tevet! What is the Halacha regarding fasting on an intercontinental flight - and across 7 time zones? Do I use New York time to determine how long I fast, and when the fast is over?
Answer
If you leave NY fasting – you should do as follows: if you reach Israel at night – you break your fast as you land, if you are on the plane when the fast finishes in NY – you can eat then.
