Question
Hello, I bought a ’kosher kitchen’ pareve peeler in a kosher store, I forgot to tovel it prior to using it, i used it to peel potatoes and carrots, i then put the potatoes and carrots into a meaty pot with water and boiled it to make a stew! I want to know if i made the meaty pot NOT kosher by forgetting to tovel the peeler and by using it! Do i need to kasher the meaty pot and the peeler now? Do i need to tovel the peeler if i bought it in a kosher store? What should i do?? Thanks in advance!
Answer
I’m sorry for the delay in someone answering your question- there must have been a mishap, for I just saw the question today, and am answering immediately. The Rama (Y.D. 120, 16) writes explicitly that if one forgot to tovel a utensil, the food and pots are still kosher, you just have to tovel that peeler, as you should have (and surely wanted to do) in the first place. You don’t need to kasher anything. Regarding the “kosher store”, you must ask the owner what that means. If the utensil was in its original unopened package and came from a non-Jewish manufacturer, than it obviously wasn’t toveled. On the other hand, if it means that the store only buys from Jewish manufacturers from Israel or abroad, than not only does it not require tvila, but it’s a bracha l’vatala (an unnecessary blessing), and your’e not allowed to make a bracha on that tvila.
