What does Jewish law and thought say about defending oneself from attackers and using weapons if necessary?
It seems too many American Jews believe it is not civilized to defend oneself, and believe that the police can actually do that job.
If attacked, one is permitted and even required to defend himself. One, however, is not permitted to use more force than is necessary nor is he allowed to use force other than to repel the attack. Whether or not police protection is adequate varies from community to community.
